About us

Invest & Fund was founded in November 2012 by David Turner and Mark Hawkins to provide an alternative route to funding for small and medium-sized businesses struggling to borrow from the more traditional sources of finance, whilst offering individuals and institutions an innovative way to lend their money.

David’s involvement with various large trading and exchange systems in the city coupled with Mark’s 35 years of accounting experience and various directorship roles meant that both could empathise with the hurdles facing both Borrowers and Lenders, with a clear solution in mind. They enlisted the services of Chief Technology Officer Stephen Kenny – a veteran of successful technology start-ups such as Betfair and The Property Investment Market – who set about building the proprietary software for the exchange.

After 18 months of rigorous testing to ensure that the processes were robust, transparent and fair, Invest & Fund facilitated its first loan to a company in July 2014.


The shift to property

As the loan book grew, an increasing number of enquiries were received from property developers, looking to finance their next projects. Loans for this sector were attracting the greatest interest for Lenders on the platform too, with a clear appetite for more of the same. As a result, in August 2015 Invest & Fund moved to a 100% focus on the development and bridging finance market. The firm was staying true to its roots with the peer-to-peer concept still at the core, whilst catering to the appetite of the users.

Our in-house originators are spread across England and Wales and use their understanding of their local area to work closely with each Borrower application that comes through to us.

Completely flexible loan selection

Our Lenders can decide exactly which Borrowers they would like to lend to and when.


 

Meet the team

Our Applications team works closely with our originators to complete initial due diligence on new Borrower applications. If the application proceeds, then the Applications team will manage throughout.

Rob Burgess

Chairman

Robert has more than 25 years’ financial services experience, primarily in the Retail, SME and Wealth arenas. He was part of the Group Executive Resource at Lloyds Banking Group, holding a number of senior positions including Executive Director and Board member, LloydsTSB Scotland. Following stints at the Bank of England in mid-2008 (credit crisis) and as an Executive Director at Thomas Cook UK&I, he was appointed CEO of Alliance Trust Savings & main Board Director, Alliance Trust PLC. Latterly, he was CEO & a Co-founder with Liberum of Exchange Associates Ltd, which became P2PGI, the first dedicated listed Institutional Lender and provider of permanent investor capital to the P2P sector. He is a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Board Credit & Board Risk Committees at OakNorth Bank. Robert is currently an FCA SMF10 approved person, having previously held both CF1 and CF3 roles.

Mark Kibblewhite

Non-Executive Director

Mark has worked in financial services for over 30 years. In 2005 he was responsible for developing Barclays UK’s private bank franchise and was a member of Barclays Wealth’s global management committee, building the Ultra High Net Worth business across EMEA. Prior to this, he was MD and Head of Debt and Equity Capital Markets and Risk Management in EMEA. Until February 2004, Mark also ran the Investment Banking UK arm and was responsible for the largest relationships Barclays had in the UK. He has been a P2P investor for 10 years.

Brian Lynch

Non-Executive Director

With an M.Eng in Engineering and Computer Sciences from Oxford University, Brian used his skills in the financial markets with CS First Boston, designing fixed income trading systems and innovative electronic markets. He moved to Greenwich Natwest and became Head of Sterling Swaps and then MD of Sterling Data at RBS after their takeover. By 2008 he was Global Head of Sterling Data, before moving to Nomura International PLC as MD of Non-Euro Delta Trading and later Head of Flow Rates EMEA. An 8-year veteran of P2P investing, he has a proven track record and full understanding of the resale/secondary markets.

David Turner

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

David spent 30 years’ working in the City as a trader at various financial institutions such as RBS and Tullett Prebon. After being involved in the development of an exchange, David decided there was an opportunity out there to join the financial revolution. In January 2013, David and Mark Hawkins paired together and started building the exchange. In May 2013, David left the City to concentrate full-time on the development of Invest & Fund.


Mark Hawkins

Chief Financial Officer and Co-Founder

Mark is an FCA qualified chartered accountant who has held a variety of Financial Directorship roles at SMEs for over 30 years, predominantly in manufacturing and engineering, so has an enormous amount of experience in guiding businesses through all the financial challenges that are faced. Mark is responsible for all financial transactions that pass through the organisation, along with liaising with the FCA to ensure that we are operating to industry standards.


Paul Pashley

Operations Director

Paul is an experienced Senior Operations professional and Retail Financial Services Executive with a successful career across numerous business operations, spanning over 30 years. This has incorporated Director level responsibility for business operational and regulatory environments, significant change delivery projects, problem resolution and corporate actions as well as leading business improvement activity.

Paul has held Executive and Senior Operational Roles for such household names as Barclays Global Investors, Barclays Wealth, Barclays Life, Woolwich Plc, Woolwich Life and UCB Homeloans, the specialist subsidiary of Nationwide. He has held Board Level responsibilities at the Communication Workers Friendly Society and Advisory Panel responsibilities at Forester Life. More recently he has set up and established an on-line business supporting the Health and Medical sector.

Paul has been an FSA Approved Person and Controlled Function Holder including CF1, CF10, CF20 and CF28.


Stephen Kenny

Chief Technology Officer

Stephen is an experienced CTO & CEO with extensive understanding of working with successful high growth, technology-driven businesses. Stephen is a veteran of exchange start-ups (Betfair, The Property Investment Market, WRESE) and was also founder of the first peer-to-peer Investment network. He is also a COBOL programmer. Stephen has written the proprietary software for the exchange and is now designing and coordinating the ongoing development of our platform.

Bill Lindsay

Head Of Credit Risk

A career banker with more than 40 years in the industry, Bill has covered a wide range of origination roles across Retail, Corporate, and Investment Banking. More recently, his focus turned to Credit - both policy and loan approval - at a senior level with Barclays Corporate and Barclays Capital. He was also Head of Credit for Eurohypo, a specialist property Lender, for a period. Bill brings his vast experience to Invest & Fund as our Head of Credit Risk.

Steve Jupp

Credit Assessment

Steve was previously a corporate banker with Barclays for over 35 years, with his roles there covering both relationship banking and credit risk, with specialism in leveraged finance and property/construction. He held various senior leadership positions, including heading up the Property Credit team which handled transactions ranging from £1m to £2bn. Following retirement from Barclays at the end of 2006, Steve worked with the likes of the Bank of England, CIT and Bank of Ireland in various consultancy roles. Steve operates as a credit consultant for Invest & Fund.

Richard Payne

Credit Assessment

Richard was previously a corporate banker with Barclays for over 40 years, where he covered a wide range of roles within relationship banking and risk management. He specialised in property & construction-related lending for more than 20 years, and headed the Structured Property Finance team for many years, handling a wide range of specialist and bespoke lending transactions. He retired from Barclays in 2014.

Annabel Allen

Compliance Officer

Annabel has over 12 years of experience, in a range of compliance roles. Most recently, she has worked in a compliance consultancy role for a firm providing execution and arranging services to institutional clients and an on-line contract for a trading firm. She spent 6 years in compliance at UBS in different positions, which included managing the monitoring and surveillance team. Prior to that she spent 4 years in compliance at JPMorgan. She has passed the CISI Diploma in Investment Compliance and the Legal Practice Course, the final vocational stage of examinations for becoming a solicitor in England and Wales.

Nathan Turton

Web Developer

Nathan graduated from the University of Brighton with a BSc (Hons) in Internet Computing. He is primarily focused on providing users with the best possible experience by utilising the latest technology and design trends to create beautiful, dynamic and responsive websites. Nathan has the skillset required to take a project from initial planning right through to live deployment and as such is actively involved in developing our ever evolving web platform.


Max Barraclough

Software Developer

Max holds an MEng in Computer Science from the University of Southampton. An avid technologist, he works to enhance the operating efficiency of the company by developing its in-house software infrastructure and applications, as well as its website.

Simon Atherton

Business Development Manager

Simon joined us in August 2015 after more than 25 years’ experience in property lending. Simon worked for Lloyds as an SME Manager and more recently for Hampshire Trust Plc as Associate Director (Property Lending). His responsibilities included the relationship management of the bank’s largest developments and membership of the bank’s credit committee for the approval of commercial/residential lending. Simon also sat on the bank’s Executive, AML and Strategy committees. Simon is an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and holds a BSc in Financial Services.


Cass Khan

Business Development Manager

Cass started his career working as a Corporate Banking Manager for HSBC. He then went on to become a Relationship Director at Santander Bank, growing and maintaining high net-worth client relationships. For the past 11 years, Cass has been working as an Independent Broker, specialising in Real Estate Finance gaining years of trust and reliability among developers and his loyal client base.

Helen Cocker

Operations Manager

Helen is an experienced manager in all areas of operational administration. She has over 30 years’ experience in the financial, commercial and not-for-profit sectors. As her knowledge has been gained in various roles across many sectors, Helen has been influential in many diverse projects. Among her many strengths is the ability to look at systems and alter process and procedure to make efficiencies, with a view to always improve customer experience.


Gary Trueman

Head of Borrower Origination

With more than 34 years' experience in commercial and corporate banking, Gary leads a team responsible for delivering a first class, flexible service to all of our borrowers, brokers and intermediaries. Gary's leadership, technical and credit risk skills means he and the business development team can work alongside borrowers and the I&F Credit Team to build compelling lending opportunities that deliver value for everyone. Jay King

Internal Head of Borrowers

Jay joined Invest & Fund in November 2015, having previously been on the Barclays Corporate Graduate Scheme. Jay worked as an Assistant Relationship Manager for the UK’s largest Professional Services firms and more recently as a Credit Analyst in the Property Credit team. Having worked on some of the UK’s largest residential development deals, Jay brings with him a wide range of knowledge and understanding of the property deal process. Jay has used his experience to refine the way in which Invest & Fund reviews and monitors its Borrowers, making sure each deal runs smoothly. Jay has a keen eye for detail, and delivers efficient and thorough credit reporting on a day-to-day basis.


Mary Miller

Loan Administrator

Mary joined us in 2016 and has over 30 years’ experience in the banking and finance industry, working at companies such as NatWest, Arbuthnot Commercial Finance and Bibby Financial Services. For the last ten years she has been undertaking a new business administration role and customer service is one of her key skills.


Rachel Hunt

Loan Administrator

Rachel joined us in 2016 and has over 20 years’ experience in administration and finance. She started her career as an account executive for Dun and Bradstreet, moving onto the publishing industry as an office manager and most recently has worked for the Let's Do Business Group as a Loan Administrator for Start Up Businesses. Rachel's key skills are building solid business relationships with clients and outside agencies keeping the key focus on the client at all times.


Victoria Collins

Recruitment Officer

Over the years Victoria has held a variety of senior positions within corporate finance (Santander), sales and recruitment. She has a proven track record of building long-term relationships with customers and clients ensuring value is provided to them and their business. Victoria co-ordinates all actions relating to Borrower applications at I&F, including the management of security documentation and originator liaison. Victoria’s efficiency, professionalism and enthusiasm shines through in every task she partakes in.


Andrea Dennis

Office Manager

Andrea has over 17 years’ experience in a variety of senior administrative roles and is responsible for all HR co-ordination within the company. The day-to-day control of the office is down to her superb organisational skills. Andrea keeps us all in order and ensures everything in the office runs smoothly and efficiently.
